Richard Hakluyt appealed to Queen Elizabeth I (the 1st) to begin financing more exploration and even an immediate English migration to the Americas. The English had not really explored earlier as they were torn by a religious schism for decades. When Queen Elizabeth I consolidated her kingdom with a new Church of England, she created a United Kingdom. Now Great Britain was finally in a position to consider overseas settlements.
Read over the reasons offered by Richard Hakluyt attached in the link. Then choose one reason that you believe was probably going to be the most persuasive of them all and offer a brief complete response as a comment as to why you chose that reason.
There is no correct response, we just need to substantiate our responses with evidence from our Chapter One readings. As is our pattern, reply to two others and offer feedback to those classmates.
Question: Which of Richard Hakluyt's reasons to begin English expansion appears to be the most persuasive in getting England to want to support exploration and colonization of the Americas?

ReplyDeleteI think Number 1 is the most persuasive argument. Spreading the Church of England seems very important especially as Queen Elizabeth just consolidated it. Also the English, like Thomas Moore, wanted to have a "mythical and nearly perfect society". A perfect society for them would be under the Church of England and the idea of them making that would be too hard to pass up on.
ReplyDeleteThis a really interesting argument. A "perfect society" under England would definitely include having the Church of England in power.
DeleteThat makes sense because there's really no good reason to not want to spread a newly formed religion, especially since Europe was still catholic-dominated and the Americas were not
DeleteThis is a powerful argument, having England spread their religion is important, because they had formed the new Church of England, something that would be worth spreading to compete with the Roman Catholic Church.
DeleteAlthough I did not choose number one, I can see how it is a viable choice as spreading ones religion could be seen as really important or something that must be done.
DeleteI think reason number three is a good argument for expansion, since it is essentially saying that expansion will bring economic growth and success. England had just been facing hard times, and after a cultural and religious shift (creation of the Church of England) were looking to further expand. Colonization allowed for new supplies of resources and goods to be acquired, which would help England in their 'colonization war' with Spain. Mercantilism also applies here, because acquiring a successful overseas colony allowed England to be more self sufficient when it came to gathering certain resources.
ReplyDeleteI agree. England's competition with the Spanish was emphasized a lot Richard Hakluyt's list.
DeleteI agree. The English weren't the richest so number three would've been very attractive for them.
DeleteI agree, the mercantilist angle given by reason number three would definitely convince the British to colonize.
DeleteI agree because economic growth and success would be reason as to why someone would want to migrate.
DeleteI agree, with the mercantilism ideas becoming more and more popular, profits were at the forefront of England's thoughts.
DeleteUnderstandable, since the main reason for expansion was to gain economic power.
DeleteI believe that Number 3 is the most compelling in terms of convincing Queen Elizabeth to fund more for this exploration. At that time, England is basically importing many goods from rival countries so it would make sense to establish colonies to not be so dependent on rival countries such as the Dutch and the French.
ReplyDeleteI agree. The English probably wanted to depend less on their rivals so this would be very important for them.
DeleteYes, during that period having control over more land was important so number three is the most convincing.
DeleteI agree with this, having England the ability to extract goods from the Americas is crucial, since relying on rival countries can grow their economies, something England probably wouldn't like.
DeleteI agree, as it would put much more of a power gap and having a much more stable platform rather then relying on rival countries.
DeleteNumber 3 was the most persuasive in getting England to want to support exploration and colonization in the Americas. Number 3 is the argument that trades and recourses in the Americas will boost England's trade. Trade that has been depleted due to other countries trading in Europe. In addition, the market for wool, England's strongest export collapsed leaving Europe searching for places to find wealth. Colonization is a valuable tool in a mercantilistic economy like Englands (as it creates a great supply of resources to export to other countries), so the Americas looked to be the perfect place to find wealth where they were lacking.
ReplyDeleteI agree. They can get more supplies and resources with access to foreign areas.
DeleteI agree, provided that their colonies were successful, the English were guaranteed access to many new resources and trade routes because of their colonies. I remember reading somewhere that at this time souther England began to run out of certain natural resources, such as wood, so their colonies had to import it to them.
DeleteYes, especially since at the time, England was in shambles and was in desperate need of economic and social reforms.
DeleteI agree, gaining access to other places would boost their economy, and at the time they desperately needed that, so it is a really compelling argument.
DeleteI agree with this. Having new land would help during this time.
DeleteReason number three was the most convincing in my opinion because Richard mentions how they will have access to other continents. This is important because after having access to more land, they can expand their trade and increase their wealth. They can also acquire more resources and supplies from different countries. Having connections with foreign countries is a good idea in general since it can help you gain more allies.
ReplyDeleteI also took the land approach, because having land automatically means having more resources. That is something every empire needs to thrive.
DeleteI agree that the third reason is the most persuasive because by expanding, their trade also expands.
DeleteI like the idea that connections with forgein allies is related to use and trade of resources.
DeleteI understand the point of having connections with other countries which would mean allies if a possible war was to outbreak
DeleteReason #3 would probably be the best reason to persuade England to colonize and explore, because it would give access to many resources from Europe, Asia, Africa, and beyond to fuel trade. Having all these resources can allow for more prosperous trade, where England can have many resources, which they can trade with other nations to grow the economy, especially after it experienced some rough times. England will get the chance to repair itself after the religious schism.
ReplyDeleteI agree, especially because many english believed that there may have been a shortcut to Asia that they could find bye sailing west. If they had found this, it would have been a massive incentive to explore.
DeleteI agree, gaining access to other continents and their resources would be really compelling.
DeleteI believe that the argument "That this western voyage will yield unto us all the commodities of Europe, Africa, and Asia, as far as we were wont to travel, and supply the wants of all our decayed trades" is the most compelling argument. This is because England wanted to get a monopoly on goods to improve their economy via the economic policy of mercantilism. By expanding their land and using colonies to get natural resources, England could massively increase their power and improve their economy.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your points—mercantilism and monopolies were new ideas that were able to kick-start colonies.
DeleteReason number three was most the persuasive for me. At the time, England was in a state of hardship, given the religious schism, which impacted their unity and economy. Hence, they would've wanted to colonize for trade and economic purposes, just as Hakluyt was getting at in reason number three.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement of them wanting to colonize because of trade and economic purposes that would increase the Kingdoms economy.
DeleteI agree since this is a way for England to recover from the religious schism.
Deleteyeah, the economy was very important.
DeleteI agree with this. The economy needed a boost.
DeleteI agree, the economy could pull the English together in such a divided time.
DeleteThe most persuasive reason would be number 14 which states, “ That this action will be greatly for the increase, maintenance and safety of our Navy, and especially of great shipping which is the strength of our Realm, and for the supportation of all those occupations that depend upon the same” because if the Navy strengthens, which directly strengthens the shipping (trade), and the many occupations that depend on it, the Queen’s kingdom is much more prosperous and stronger, allowing the Queen to be persuaded by the economic growth and the increase of the power of the Navy.
ReplyDeleteI agree, the British navy was very important for their relationship with Spain, and their military might.
DeleteI agree, but I wouldn't think this would be the most persuasive reason. Direct economic growth would probably be more appealing and more inclusive of all benefits than just the improvement of the navy.
DeleteIn my opinion, reason #3 is the most persuasive argument. This argument explains that by expanding and exploring, England will gain access to other continents. This allows them to get access to more continents and obtain new resources from the land. Trade will expand and become more prosperous by having these connections.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree, especially given the fact that England was going through a religious schism and economic growth would've been incredibly beneficial.
DeleteI agree. Expanding and adding markets and products for England would be extremely beneficial in alleviating past English poverty from its past economic and social struggles.
DeleteI agree with you as well, as Sasha wrote England would be interested in rebuilding and re-growing their empire, so more wealth and money would serve them well.
DeleteI thought that reason three was the most compelling. It says that by exploring, England will gain all the riches of those places and it will grant them to right to travel as far as they want. This will further their own wealth and will allow them to expand further and reap all the benefits of that, like trade opportunities and more colonies, as well.
ReplyDeleteI think that this could be a really good reason why England would want to expand, as we know that even without planning for the future, they end up creating plantations for economic purposes anyways.
DeleteI agree, money equals power, which is always something nobles and leaders want.
DeleteThe most persuasive argument Hakluyt makes is argument two. It is multifaceted, and outings religious, political, military, and civil works reasons to establish colonies in the new world. It looks out for English traders, the church of England, and the general English attitude towards Spain.
ReplyDeleteEven though I didn't choose this reason, I still think this also seems like a good reason to colonize.
DeleteGiven the impact of religious changes and reformations in England at the time, I would think that the first reason would be one of the more important. With the Church of England probably wanting to gain new followers, as well as protestants wanting the opposite, a new land, free from ties to the old one, is probably exactly what they wanted.
ReplyDeleteI didn't choose this but this is also a good reason to start colonization.
DeleteI completely agree because religion was an important topic in England at the time as religion could be a reason why people would want to migrate to America.
DeleteThe 3rd reason seems the most persuasive. It's saying that through colonization, the English will be able to get crops and materials from whatever place they want. The English will be able to get valuable materials and crops, from the land they plan to colonize, and from there trade for other stuff they may want, which would then make them successful/wealthy.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, reason 3 is the most persuasive. It explains that by encouraging and investing into colonization, they would be able to colonize and gather supplies and resources from this newly discovered land. Trade would also help expand the economy.
ReplyDeleteReason #3 is the most effective reason given in the pursuit of persuading England to colonize and explore the Americas, because it appeals to their sense of mercantilism and growing trade. Having all the resources and trade gained from Africa and Asia would become assets to England.
ReplyDeleteI believe reason 3 is the most persuasive because it sounds as if the settlers will not have to worry about trying to survive as exploring the land will support them with the recourses they need to survive in the Americas.
ReplyDeleteThe third of Richard Hakluyt's reasons is the most persuasive because of its promising opportunities in the most important aspect of migration, which is economic growth. With the fairly recent past struggles in the English economy before its transition into a country ready for expansion. Acquiring markets and products to increase prosperity is the most appealing result in migrating and colonizing.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this, and I hadn't thought about how England's problems with the economy would factor in but that would definitely increase their want to expand and discover new goods.
DeleteI think that the third reason was the most persuasive as it showed that exploring the Americas would help with bringing in money. Also, as we learned, mercantilism was very popular and this reason plays on the idea of profits which would be most convincing to someone who is prioritizing this.
ReplyDeleteThe third reason that Hakluyt gave is the most persuasive and sensible reason for the exploration of the Americas. The exploration of the Americas would essentially result in not only financial benefits but cultural advancements as well. It supports the idea of mercantilism and provides a modern perspective to exploration.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this, and I didn't think about how it would cause cultural advancements as well but that is a very good point.
DeleteI, as many of my peers, agree with the fact that option 3 is the most persuasive. Richard Hakluyt demonstrates knowledge of his audience when submitting the argument that oversea exploration will benefit the nation, as it is always popular in a nobles eye to increase the wealth and financial capabilities of their nation. Hakluyt knows that Queen Elizabeth is keen to rebuild as well as strengthen the England further, which is why this argument ought to resonate with her the most.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your point about the prospect of financial benefits exploration holds. I like how you included the Queen’s perspective on exploration as her point of view greatly influenced the decisions England made.
DeleteSorry, I wrote "the England" as a mistake.
ReplyDeleteI have noticed that many other commenters have chosen option 3, and I agree with them. Option 3 is the most persuasive because it can offer the most benefits while also possibly weakening other nations. By discovering goods through exploration, England would have a possible chance to create a monopoly on that good, exponentially increasing England's wealth. Additionally, said good might need to be produced, and that would create jobs. Plus, by discovering this before other countries and by gaining more wealth, they are demonstrating their power.
ReplyDeleteI agree that this offers the most benefits and can weaken other nations.
DeleteThe 3rd reason seems the best and the most persuasive. It says that through colonization, the English will be able to get crops and materials from whatever place they want. It offers the best chances following the most opportunities. This would create an easier way in trading, discovering new goods and items, jobs would be created.
