Europeans See A Bigger World

The peoples of Europe are largely provincial in the centuries following the collapse of their conquerors, the Roman Empire. The European people have held onto much of the cultural identity that was forced upon them by the Roman regime including their alphabet, the Middle Eastern religion of Christianity and even the imperial way of organizing a society which empowered a few to rule, and often oppress, the many.

Why and how these rather unsophisticated conquered people will come to build overseas empires that rival the largest ever in human history needs to be well understood if we are to know our own story.

Take a moment to consider what is needed by any people
who wish to create an overseas empire.

In the Blogger space below write a comment that argues for one thing that a people will need to begin this process, defending your choice.

Then, as is our pattern, reply to two of your classmates offering feedback. Write your comment before reading the comments of others. This will increase the likelihood of a wide variety of responses. Be as "obvious" or as "subtle" as you like, all responses that are defended will be given full credit.

  1. Over the Years, Many Empires have come and gone, but what we must question is How were they able to become Empires? For One, what they needed was the resources to be able to venture and conquer a new land. Resources in itself is a vague term to describe how people were able to create a overseas empire. For one, they needed the financial resources to be able to fund this venture to create a overseas empire, financial resources to fund the man power, the equipment necessary to fund overseas expansion....

    1. That's a good point. Though it seems basic to say resources are required, an empire without all its resource supplies sorted out is very vulnerable in the event of a military attack or a natural disaster.

    2. I completely agree with this reasoning, and I actually hadn't thought of recourses when choosing my answer. Recourses are definitely necessary for funding and fueling such a hefty venture as an overseas empire.

    3. Manpower and resources are both needed, and I agree, because you're going to need men to defend the colony or help conquer the natives, and also have men use resources to help expand the colony to make it prosper.

  2. If someone were to attempt creating an overseas empire, one thing that they would definitely need would be a massive military collective. Having a monstrous amount of people in both your navy and in your ground forces is so vital because your empire will need to be able to defend itself in case of attacks. Adding onto that, the wider the reach of your empire, the larger your military will need to be, so that it can adequately defend every major city under your control. If your overall military might is lacking, opposing empires would most likely be more eager to attack you, because they think you would not be able to properly defend. However, if your military is massive and is known to be such, that fact will dissuade people from even considering attacking your empire.

    1. I 100% agree with you, an army is necessary to be able to move forward with overseas expansion

    2. I agree with you Max. You definitely need an extremely powerful military to have any chance of a successful invasion.

    3. I agree that a military is important since you'll become feared and then you can take over more land to grow as an empire.

    4. Yes, an army is very important for an empire as it will show others your power. and have them be afraid of you as their leader.

    5. I agree. Empires are most likely only able to conquer and expand through force.

  3. Anyone that wants to create an overseas empire needs to remain in contact with their territories abroad. If they fail to do so, they won't know if their overseas land has plunged in to anarchy or has expanded in to new territory. This is why a fast and efficient means of traveling long distances is necessary. Without the technology required to sail across an ocean reliably or traverse far away lands, an empire can not effectively expand in to a new overseas region. This means of travel allows the empire to exchange information, announcements, goods, and to shuttle people who want to move abroad. Without it, they might as well not expand at all, since people in the mainland empire won't have a clue what's happening 'across the pond' for weeks or even months at a time.

    1. I agree. An easy means of communication or travel is vital so that the people in all the different places are coordinated and know what is happening. (Which kinda has to do with my response, which spoke about leadership. You need leaders so you can be coordinated and understand what is happening and where)

    2. I did not consider this Noah, but I completely agree. It is very important to have a strong communication line with your homeland. Without it, it would be near impossible to survive overseas - with little to no resources.

    3. This is a very interesting aspect, and one that I completely missed when thinking of aspects to choose from. All the resources and military power in the world are wasted if the commanders don't know the full scope of where everything is.

    4. I agree as well. If the settlers are not equipped with necessary clothing for the winter, they may all die. A supply of warmth clothes from oversees can quite literally save everyone.

    5. I agree, advanced technology is definitely useful for a colony, which I forgot to say in my response. Needing communications is always important, if there isn't communication, it won't even feel like a nation has overseas territories. It's better for them to know that their colony is doing well and is still alive.

    6. I agree with you, an overseas empire needs to remain in contact with its colonies or else there will be chaos, Having communication is very important, to know of the colonies status.

  4. The most important thing an empire can have in order to expand is great leadership. Without a leader of some kind or some sort of government to guide explorers or an army, then those people will have no plan. Without a plan for how you will go about expansion overseas, then it's impossible. Something as major as this needs great leaders, be it in government or even within the military.

    1. I agree that leadership is crucial for an empire to expand, but I don't think it's the most important thing for an empire to have. A leader without people to lead is just a person.

    2. I agree that leadership is important because it can help your army become stronger and stronger, which helps you become feared and become an empire.

    3. I agree that leadership is important to the creation of an empire because without leader for guidance, is it really considered an empire?

    4. I agree. Guidance is crucial when expanding over large distances. If an empire lacks strong leadership, it will never be able to expand.

  5. Creating on overseas empire means needing a lot of recourses. People need immense wealth to travel overseas, as well as a strong military and superior weaponry over those you may have to conquer. A society needs a highly efficient government/bureaucracy system to organize not only a trip overseas, but invasion, and to build a community and civilization far from home. These people should also have an understanding of the type of land they plan to take over, like how to farm on the land. Conquers also need a large group of people to travel overseas, in order to create a foundational community in that area. In the European invasion of the Americas often they did not have any understanding of how to survive, and needed help. However, their superior military, overtime, overpowered the indigenous people.

    1. I said the same thing! I talked about how crucial it is that they have leadership and a government of some sort. Formal and established institutions like a government or a military are definitely some of the most important components.

    3. I very much agree that you need to have a lot of resources and wealth, because you don't want to be stranded in a foreign land with no supplies. That would be a unsuccessful mission and a waste of people and resources, after all.

  6. The first and most important aspect of creating a successful overseas invasion is communication with the mother civilization. Thus ships and efficient ways to send mail are paramount in the effort to survive and eventually flourish. When one arrives in a foreign land and attempt to live there they will always lack information. What the climate patterns are or whether the land is fertile nobody will know up arrival, thus meaning that the settlers will not have the resources to deal with the new, unprecedented aspects of life. The aid of their overseas empire or civilization can erase the worry of dealing with such troubles they are unprepared for, by simply shipping the necessities they need to survive and continue growing.

  7. What's needed to have an oversea empire is great military tactics. There would have to be people that would defend people, with this you can have your army grow. The army could be trained to be just as good as the ones oversea. The army would become feared, allowing you to take over countries. This gives you more resources, more army power, and more control. This all continues until you have created an overseas empire thanks to the management of the army.

  8. In order to start an overseas empire, a nation will need a strong navy, because a navy can be used to help expand the empire or fend off invaders. They also need to consider what is needed to start a permanent colony, because a colony that cannot sustain itself will just die off in a couple years. There needs to be women, and crops on settlements so that the colony can grow. The navy can also help supply the colony by bringing in food, but it will take much longer to supply. It also can cost a lot to colonize, so it won't be an easy task to do. But, colonies can bring back goods and riches that can be sold at the homeland, which can give some more money for more colonization. It takes time and money to begin an overseas empire, and you might even have to deal with the natives of a land if you try colonizing them.

  9. There are essential tools required to build an overseas empire. This includes having a strong military along with a strong leader in order to defend your empire from neighboring attacks. There also needs to be a good government as well as rules and regulations as guidance to the people. Having ideas and a trading system is also essential for creating an overseas empire. Overall, there should be a mixture of all of these points to have a successful, at least for now, empire.

  11. People who want to create an overseas empire need to be able to read. Literacy is so important to understanding the world around us, and if you can't understand the world around you, how can you travel? Part of the reason why the Europeans took so long to find the Americas is because they were in a dark age. Most of the population couldn't read and therefore society couldn't progress. However, once the gutenburg printing press was invented, Europe went into a period of thriving, new inventions, and the people started to explore.

  12. people will need a reliable sense of direction to create and overseas empire. and because of this, people will need a compass to Create an overseas empire. With a compass sea voyages became much less dangerous and people could make voyages quicker, safer, and more accurately. because of this, more people wanted to make sea voyages, which meant that sea trade was more profitable. because of this, people needed better ways to get around, they needed more control, and that inspired the period of overseas empires.

  13. The creation of overseas empires needs a strong collaboration of people across many fields. A developing empire requires people in math, astronomy, engineering, and many more fields in order to have the power to expand over the world. Through this, reliable ship-building, navigation, and other aspects of expansion are made possible. Of course strong militaries and leaders are important, but the people who help them get there are just as needed.

    3. I completely agree that while a strong military is mandatory, it is not the only thing necessary for an overseas establishment for your empire. Citizens must feel that they WANT to remain part of this distant empire, no matter how far from home they are.

    4. When you think of all the successful empires in history, they all had specialized jobs for different people. Different job specializations were essential in maintaining a strong balance in the economy and in the community.

  14. Creating an overseas empire requires an organized government. While maintaining one empire is hard enough, managing one across the sea requires meticulous planning and organization. The government must decide what form they operate under, and if their colony will maintain it. They must delegate who rules, their army, their resources to build their home away from home. For example, in the American colonies in the 1700s, while parliament ruled from afar, the British sent military to enforce the laws. The organization and delegation of government is important in palnning an extension of your country.

  15. An overseas empire is extremely hard to create and maintain. This not only requires an extremely strict and organized government but also a very cooperative colony or civilization. To begin creating an overseas government, the home civilization must be extremely progressed and developed with its specializations, travel, mathematics, and military. This is all needed so that the colony can be travelled to and constantly visited by the rest of the population.

  16. I would say when creating an overseas empire is a solid defense mechanism or military. When creating an empire there's lots of things that need to be considered but when its overseas you have to realize you need to be able defend the civilization your building. Its key to be able to protect your people so you know you can build a civilization or an empire knowing that you could defend it and help it stay their.

  17. An oversea empire has multiple cogs in its well oiled machine, one of the biggest cogs needed to begin the process of building an overseas empire is influential people. These people come off as authoritative and trustworthy which is a huge advantage when it comes to rallying and uniting the people under one rule (empire).

Without a powerful military your overseas cities will be left undefended and easily taken, and without good living conditions, your empire will break apart, especially in the overseas cities where they may feel more independent than say, a city near the capital.

An empire is an extensive collection of states and/or countries that have been conquered and then consolidated to create a ledger civilization. In order to conquer, a powerful army is a necessity. 22. If an empire wanted to create overseas settlements, their most basic need would be a desire for conquest, exploration and expansion, without which they would never leave their homes. Once a motivation is found, they will need an array of maritime technologies; boats, navigational tools, and skilled crewmen. They will also need a strong military to conquer the first peoples, and to keep control of their territories.

    1. The motivations for expansion doesn't necessarily have to be the ones you mentioned, but overall I agree. No settlement would succeed if no one was that thrilled about establishing it, and the empire would need the actual ability to set up the settlements. A good plan is very important too for a proper and effective expansion.

  24. The most important requirement for overseas settlements is having people that are actually willing to go. Push and pull factors such as lack of land and a desire for riches are things that would motivate people to leave their homelands for new ones. Of course they would need the proper technology, military strength, and plan for what they want to do in the new lands.

  25. Creating an overseas empire will require an army. If you are planning to take over land, you'll eventually meet people who aren't so willing to give up their land. Without an army, you'll be killed or captured. You also need a military to make sure that no one else comes and takes the land that you've acquired.
